Headless body of woman who went missing 20 years ago found in reservoir

A headless body found in reservoir has been identified as missing mum Sandie Bowen - who was murdered 20 years ago.

Her husband Michael Bowen was jailed in 1998 for the killing, but he refused to reveal where he dumped the body. The remains have now been found in a reservoir in Wentwood, south Wales.

A dog walker made the tragic discovery and the killer's chilling secret was finally uncovered when the reservoir was drained and her body was spotted.

Sandie, 54, vanished from her home in Llandogo, Monmouthshire, in August 1997 - hours after a friend told her second husband she was having an affair. The victim's daughter Anita Giles insists the claims of adultery are not true.

The body had no head, feet or hands but DNA tests have confirmed it was Sandie, police said in a statement.

The remains were still tied to a massive concrete block that Bowen used to weigh it down to the bottom of the reservoir.

Police broke the news to Sandie’s family this week and they are now finally planning a funeral for her.

After his arrest, Bowen told another prisoner on remand: “They will never find the body.”Jailing the killer for life, Mr Justice Eady said in 1998: “This was a remarkable and callous exercise of concealment.

“The sad fact of this case is that Sandra Bowen's family will probably never know where her body lies.”

Sandie's daughter Anita believes forestry worker Bowen killed her mum during a row in their bedroom where a speck of blood was later found on a pillow.

Bowen later called Anita to say he had dropped Sandie off at a railway station and she was intending to visit her in Kent.

But when Sandie failed to arrive, Anita called police who found her false teeth in a dustbin at home - along with her wedding and engagement rings.Bowen denied the killing during his trial but was found guilty by a jury.

He finally admitted he was responsible for his wife’s death from his jail cell in 2002 - but still refused to reveal the whereabouts of her body.

Bowen was freed after 18 years in February 2015 - sparking calls that convicted killers should never be released if they have refused to reveal where their victims' bodies are located.
