The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has revealed that about 650 athletes drawn from all units and formations in the country will compete for honours in the 2016 edition of the service’s games holding in Katsina State.

Explaining activities lined up for the games, Chairman, NAF Games Organising Committee, Air Commodore Charles Oghomwen, said apart from the athletes actively engaged in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, all others from the various formations across the country are expected to participate in the games.

The game, which began on October 14 and will end on October 29, according to Oghomwen, is intended to promote participation in sports activities, as well as improve physical fitness and foster the camaraderie spirit among personnel.

He added: “605 athletes are expected to participate in 13 events that would be competed for during the games. The athletes are drawn from NAF Headquarters, Tactical Air Command (TAC) Headquarters, HQ MC, including Direct reporting Units and

Units under each command are expected to participate. In view of the huge turnout of personnel drawn from all NAF Units, there is need to ensure proper coordination of all activities.”

Among the events to feature at the games are athletics, basketball, badminton, cross country, football, golf, handball, squash, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball and wrestling.

Explaining why Katsina State was chosen to host the games, Oghomwen said the seventh edition of the games was hosted in Akwa Ibom State, but Katsina was adjudged most suitable among five other venues considered.

He added that after a facility assessment tour, it was discovered the state has an excellent synthetic pitch with outdoor and indoor sports facilities within the city.

“Besides the NYSC Camp could accommodate all the athletes. Most importantly, the state government is quite willing to support the Nigerian Air Force towards the successful hosting of the game,” he said.
